The Happiness Treadmills

Treadmill A

Happiness, n. An agreeable sensation arising from contemplating the misery of others.
- Ambrose Bierce

It is not enough to succeed. Others must fail.
- Gore Vidal

When does a hunchback rejoice? When he sees one with a larger hump.
- Yiddish saying

People are happy when they are better of than others and unhappy when they are worse off. Selfish as it may sound, that's the truth. You're happy with your job until you learn your friend earns more than you doing exactly the same thing. You're happy with your boyfriend until you learn that your friend's boyfriend bought her a limited edition LV bag for no occasion. You're happy with your girlfriend until you learn your friend's girlfriend sits watching porn together and tries to pick up the moves to satisfy him.

Treadmill B

The direct pursuit of happiness is the recipe for an unhappy life.
- Donald Campbell

The pursuit of happiness is an inalienable right.
- The Declaration of Independance

When we are unhappy, we work for things that make us happy; when we are happy, we keep the status quo...
- Steven Pinker

Prospective losses are more worthy of attention than gain; there are more things that make us unhappy than things that make us happy...
- Timothy Ketelaar

People need happiness to achieve emotional and mental fitness. Some strive more than others. Some go for short term gains, while others eye the rewards of long term 'investments'. We chase for happiness greedily in a constant manner and when we obtain it, selfishly we want things to remain unchanged. Things can stay the same until hell freezes over for all we care. Nevertheless, it is our right to want to be happy, it is natural to, it's only human. Tell me one person who does not want to be happy and is satisfied being unhappy and I will bow down to them. Perhaps this is why the world is just the way it is. With everyone striving for their own version of happiness, a mess is made.

Running on the treadmill of happiness leaves us breathless, gasping for air when we are determined and passionate about pursuing it at all costs. The key is to be wary of our stamina and how far we can go with it, our resistance level. Knowing what we stand to lose versus what we might gain and the sacrifices we probably have to make. We should stop when we can't go on any further and when we know we should not continue running. Stop when we should stop. Stop when the happiness of people we care about are at stake. Stop when our heart can't take any more exertion.

Have mentioned this phrase in my earlier postings but I shall say it again.

"The heart knows many secrets that the head does not..."

I want peace, serenity and contentment. To accept the things I cannot change and courage to brace something more real. Happiness that can be mine, that I can call my own. But how do I know what's real, what's right, what's good for me, what is my destiny?

*Inhale.......exhale.......sigh.......*
